After more than 40 years practicing healthcare architecture, Daniel Schunkewitz has embarked on a new chapter in his professional journey, following a lifelong passion for photography that he has pursued professionally for the past 20 years.

My passion for photography began during my years planning and designing healthcare facilities, where I discovered the extraordinary potential of incorporating photographic imagery as an integral component of architectural design. This experience inspired me to explore how thoughtfully selected images of nature could transform healthcare environments and contribute to a more meaningful, restorative experience for patients, healthcare providers, and family members.

Grounded in the principles of biophilic design—the integration of nature into the built environment—my mission is to create visual experiences that foster tranquility, inspire curiosity, reduce environmental stress, and support the healing process. Rather than treating artwork as a decorative afterthought, I believe imagery should be an intentional element of the overall design concept, carefully considered for its emotional impact, visual harmony, and relationship to the surrounding space.

Photography With Purpose

For the past two decades, I have documented my travels both internationally and locally, capturing the beauty, character, and stories of the natural world through a thoughtful and discerning eye. Each photograph is carefully composed, crafted, and edited to create more than a visual impression. My intention is to invite viewers into an experience of discovery, reflection, and storytelling.

While nature and floral photography remain central to my portfolio, my work has expanded to include captivating cityscapes, historical architecture, seascapes, and landscapes from destinations around the world. These diverse collections introduce opportunities for visual exploration, cultural discovery, and a sense of adventure—allowing viewers to experience places and perspectives they may not otherwise encounter firsthand.

Every image is selected and developed with its intended environment in mind. Whether the goal is to create a calming atmosphere in a patient room, bring the serenity of nature into a wellness center, or inspire conversation in a public gathering space, the artwork is designed to complement the experience of those who inhabit it.

These installations offer an engaging alternative to conventional framed artwork, introducing movement, variety, and visual stimulation while allowing spaces to adapt their atmosphere and character.

Through the combination of original photography, digital innovation, and architectural insight, I offer a distinctive approach to environmental art—one that considers not only what viewers see, but how the visual experience makes them feel.

My work is available to healthcare organizations, hospitals, medical offices, wellness and rehabilitation centers, and other environments where thoughtful design can enrich the human experience. I also collaborate with hospitality venues and public gathering spaces, including cafés, salons, and restaurants, to create distinctive visual environments that reflect their identity and purpose.

Inspired by destinations such as Greece, Italy, Spain, and many other places around Europe my travel photography brings the richness of different cultures, architectural traditions, and natural landscapes into everyday environments. These images can spark memories, encourage imagination, inspire future adventures, and create meaningful connections between people and the spaces they occupy.
